In early 2008, NVIDIA acquired Ageia Technologies, the company behind the PhysX physics engine and the first dedicated physics processing unit (PPU). Ageia had made a name for itself by developing hardware and software that brought realistic physical interactions—such as explosions, cloth simulation, and rigid body dynamics—into video games. With this acquisition, NVIDIA integrated Ageia’s PhysX technology directly into its GPU architecture, transforming physics computation into a GPU-accelerated feature.
This strategic move allowed NVIDIA to offer developers and gamers more immersive and lifelike environments by harnessing the parallel processing power of GPUs. By combining graphics and physics processing, NVIDIA advanced the capabilities of real-time rendering and interactive simulation. The integration of PhysX not only enhanced the realism in gaming but also demonstrated NVIDIA’s broader vision of unified processing for complex visual and physical interactions.
