In December 2005, NVIDIA announced its acquisition of ULi Electronics, a Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company known for designing core logic chipsets used in personal computers. Under the terms of the deal, NVIDIA agreed to purchase ULi for approximately $52 million USD, strengthening its platform solution strategy by bringing ULi’s engineering talent and technology into its fold. The acquisition was aimed at expanding NVIDIA’s multimedia and communications processor (MCP) offerings and enhancing its sales and customer engineering presence in key Asian markets like Taiwan and China.
ULi’s team and expertise were expected to bolster NVIDIA’s chipset development capabilities, particularly as ULi had supplied southbridge components for competitors’ products prior to the acquisition. By early 2006, NVIDIA completed the merger, integrating ULi’s core logic technology into its broader product ecosystem. This strategic move not only broadened NVIDIA’s hardware portfolio beyond GPUs but also reinforced its position in the PC platform space.
