Nokia formally reorganized its telecommunications operations in the late 1970s, resulting in the renaming of its division to Nokia-Mobira Oy, a joint venture that reflected its growing focus on mobile communications technology. The move followed Nokia’s collaboration with Salora Oy, a Finnish television manufacturer, which had established Mobira Oy in 1979 to develop and produce radio telephones and related communication equipment. By integrating its telecommunications efforts under the Nokia-Mobira Oy name, the company streamlined its approach to the emerging mobile communications sector. This restructuring came at a time when mobile telephony was still in its early stages, primarily limited to car phones and professional use. Nokia-Mobira Oy became responsible for developing some of the company’s earliest mobile devices, including the Mobira Senator, launched in 1982, which was designed for use in the Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) network. The renaming and organizational alignment helped consolidate Nokia’s resources and expertise in telecommunications, contributing to its later expansion in the global mobile phone industry during the 1980s and 1990s. #Nokia #Mobira #Telecommunications #MobileHistory #Finland
