In late 2018, astrophysicist and science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women, leading to public scrutiny and formal investigations. The allegations surfaced from incidents spanning decades, with the most serious claim dating back to 1984.
Musician and former academic Tchiya Amet El Maat accused Tyson of drugging and raping her while they were both graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin. She first made her allegations public in 2014, but they gained widespread attention in 2018 when additional claims surfaced. Katelyn Allers, an associate professor at Bucknell University, alleged that Tyson touched her inappropriately at an astronomy conference in 2009 while admiring her tattoo of the solar system. Another woman, Ashley Watson, who worked as his assistant on the show Cosmos, reported that she resigned after he made repeated inappropriate sexual advances toward her in 2018.
On December 1, 2018, Tyson responded to the accusations in a detailed Facebook post titled On Being Accused, in which he denied any wrongdoing and provided his perspective on each incident. He acknowledged that some interactions may have been misinterpreted but maintained that he did not engage in any misconduct. His response fueled further debate over the allegations and the standards of behavior expected from public figures in the scientific community.
Following the publicized claims, Fox and National Geographic, the networks behind Cosmos, launched investigations into Tyson’s conduct. The American Museum of Natural History, where Tyson was the director of the Hayden Planetarium, also conducted a review. By March 2019, Fox and National Geographic announced that they had completed their investigations and would proceed with their projects involving Tyson, indicating that they found no sufficient cause to remove him.
Despite the controversy, Tyson continued his work in science communication, resuming his television appearances and lectures. The situation underscored the complexities of handling sexual misconduct allegations, the importance of due process, and the evolving discussions around accountability in the scientific and media industries.
