Master's Degree in Astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin

In May 1983, Neil deGrasse Tyson earned his Master of Arts in Astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin. Under the mentorship of Professor John M. Scalo, Tyson focused his research on star formation models for dwarf galaxies, contributing to the understanding of stellar evolution in these compact systems. ​ During his time at UT Austin, Tyson was actively involved in extracurricular activities, including dance and sports. He participated in various dance styles such as jazz, ballet, Afro-Caribbean, and Latin ballroom. In 1985, he achieved a gold medal with the university's dance team in a national competition in Latin ballroom style. Additionally, he was a member of the university's wrestling and rowing teams, demonstrating his diverse interests beyond academics. ​ Despite his academic achievements, Tyson faced challenges during his tenure at UT Austin. He experienced instances of racial stereotyping, recalling that a faculty member's first comment to him was, "You must join the department basketball team!" He also reported being stopped multiple times by university police when entering the physics building, while not facing the same scrutiny when entering athletic facilities. These experiences contributed to a sense of not being fully accepted in the academic community at UT Austin. ​ Balancing his academic responsibilities with his extracurricular passions proved challenging. Tyson acknowledged that he did not dedicate as much time to research as expected, leading his professors to encourage him to consider alternative career paths. Ultimately, his doctoral dissertation committee was dissolved, effectively ending his pursuit of a Ph.D. at UT Austin. ​ This period was a pivotal moment in Tyson's academic journey, highlighting the complexities of navigating personal interests, societal challenges, and professional expectations.
