The transfer of Walvis Bay and 12 offshore islands to Namibia marked a pivotal moment in the country's history. This coastal enclave, covering an area of 780 square kilometers, was previously administered by South Africa. The transition was the result of three years of negotiations between the Namibian and South African governments, culminating in the establishment of a Joint Administrative Authority (JAA) to oversee the territory's administration. The international community recognized this peaceful resolution as a significant step towards fulfilling the provisions of United Nations Security Council Resolution 432, which had declared Walvis Bay an integral part of Namibia. This transfer not only solidified Namibia's territorial integrity but also represented a broader commitment to decolonization in the region.
