On 22/09/2020, Microsoft announced it had reached an agreement with OpenAI to exclusively license GPT-3, a large-scale natural language generation model introduced earlier that year. The agreement granted Microsoft exclusive rights to integrate GPT-3’s underlying technology into its own products and services, while OpenAI continued offering the model through its API to selected customers. Microsoft said the partnership would support development of AI-powered features across Azure and other platforms.
The announcement built on an existing collaboration between the two companies, following Microsoft’s earlier investment in OpenAI and its role as OpenAI’s preferred cloud provider. Microsoft planned to use GPT-3 within Azure AI services, enabling developers and enterprises to access advanced language capabilities for applications such as summarization, translation, code generation, and conversational systems. The exclusive licensing arrangement allowed Microsoft to embed the model directly into commercial offerings while maintaining OpenAI’s research and API access model.
At the time, GPT-3 was described as one of the largest language models publicly available, trained on hundreds of billions of words and capable of generating human-like text responses. Microsoft said the agreement would accelerate responsible AI development and expand enterprise access to advanced language technologies through Azure’s cloud infrastructure.
