The Knights Hospitaller, having been driven from Rhodes by the Ottoman Empire, established a new naval base in Malta following a strategic decision. They joined the Christian naval fleet led by Admiral Andrea Doria, aligning themselves with larger Western European efforts against Ottoman expansion. Their initial operations included assaults on Modone, targeting the Ottoman positions in the western Peloponnese. These operations disrupted Ottoman supply lines and demonstrated the growing military collaboration among European forces.
The Knights' actions extended to the Ottoman fort at Coronna. This attack aimed to further weaken Ottoman hold in the region. As part of these combined efforts, the Knights and Doria’s fleet launched an offensive on Tunis. This operation sought to dismantle the Ottoman stronghold in North Africa, thereby reducing both economic and military pressures on the Christian territories in the Mediterranean.
These engagements marked the Knights' significant contributions to the war effort against the Ottomans. Their presence in Malta facilitated quicker and more strategic naval maneuvers, capitalizing on Malta's geographical advantage. The attacks on Modone, Coronna, and Tunis were pivotal in shifting the balance of power, impacting Ottoman control and signaling the resilience and coordination of Christian forces.
