On January 11, 2013, the French Armed Forces launched a military intervention in Mali at the request of the interim government led by President Dioncounda Traoré. This decisive action was taken in response to the escalating threat posed by Islamist militants in the northern regions of the country. By January 30, the coordinated efforts of French and Malian troops successfully retook Kidal, the last remaining stronghold of the insurgents and one of the three northern provincial capitals. The operation marked a significant turning point in the fight against terrorism in the region. On February 2, French President François Hollande visited Mali, joining President Traoré in a public appearance in the historic city of Timbuktu, which had recently been liberated from militant control. This intervention not only aimed to restore stability in Mali but also underscored France's commitment to combating terrorism in West Africa, reinforcing international cooperation in the face of global security challenges.
