On June 20, 1960, the Mali Federation achieved independence from France, marking a significant milestone in the history of Mali. Following Senegal's withdrawal from the federation in August 1960, the Sudanese Republic emerged as the independent Republic of Mali on September 22, 1960. This date is now celebrated as Mali's Independence Day. Modibo Keïta was elected as the first president of the newly formed republic. Under his leadership, Mali adopted a one-party state system and embraced an independent African and socialist orientation, fostering close ties with Eastern nations. Keïta's administration also initiated extensive nationalization of economic resources, aiming to reshape the country's economic landscape. At the time of independence, Mali's population was approximately 4.1 million, reflecting a diverse and vibrant society poised for growth and development in the post-colonial era.
