The British acceptance of a French protectorate over Madagascar marked a pivotal shift in the geopolitical landscape of the Indian Ocean. This arrangement was formalized despite the fact that the local government of Madagascar did not recognize French authority. The imposition of the protectorate was characterized by military action, as the French sought to enforce their control through force. In a bid to compel the Malagasy government to capitulate, French forces bombarded key coastal cities, including Toamasina on the east coast and Mahajanga on the west coast. These military operations took place in the closing months of the year, demonstrating the lengths to which France was willing to go to establish its dominance in the region. The bombardments not only showcased French military capabilities but also highlighted the resistance faced from the Malagasy government, which remained defiant in the face of foreign intervention.
