In 2011, KellyBronze became the first turkey to receive three gold stars at the Great Taste Awards. Our own company history records the achievement, and contemporary industry coverage subsequently confirmed both the year and KellyBronze's status as the first turkey to earn the three-star distinction.
The award recognised the eating quality that had been central to the Kelly family's breeding work for decades. Derek and Mollie Kelly began breeding white turkeys for flavour and eating qualities in the 1970s. In the 1980s, the family changed direction, seeking out remaining flocks of pure bronze turkeys and developing the breeding programme that produced KellyBronze.
Receiving three gold stars provided independent recognition of that focus on flavour and became an important distinction for the product. The achievement remains part of the KellyBronze story: industry profiles continue to identify it as the first turkey to achieve three stars in the Great Taste Awards.
