In 1991, we began rearing our bronze turkeys free-range, adding a new element to the work we had already undertaken to bring traditional bronze birds back into the British Christmas turkey market. At the time, intensive production using faster-growing white-feathered breeds had become well established, so allowing our slower-growing bronze turkeys to range outdoors represented a different approach. Our company history recalls that the decision was regarded as unconventional within the industry.
Free-range rearing subsequently became an integral part of the KellyBronze production method. Our birds are given outdoor space in which to roam and forage and are grown for considerably longer than standard intensive turkeys. Together with our focus on slower-growing breeding stock, this approach became one of the defining characteristics of the KellyBronze Christmas turkey.
