In 1982, Kamala Harris enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C., marking the beginning of her higher education journey at one of the most prestigious historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the United States. Harris's decision to attend Howard was deeply significant, as the university has long been a symbol of Black excellence, activism, and leadership. For Harris, this experience played a formative role in shaping her identity, values, and career aspirations. At Howard, Harris majored in political science and economics, laying the foundation for her future in public service and law. Her time there exposed her to a rich legacy of Black intellectual thought and political activism. Howard had a well-earned reputation as a breeding ground for leaders in civil rights, politics, and law, and it was here that Harris first began to develop her sense of purpose in fighting for social justice and equality. Harris thrived in Howard’s vibrant academic and cultural environment, and she quickly became involved in campus life. She joined the debate team, which honed her public speaking and advocacy skills—traits that would later define her career as a prosecutor, U.S. Senator, and Vice President. She also became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Inc., the oldest African American sorority in the country. Her involvement in AKA connected her to a broader network of Black women leaders and activists, a support system that continued to be important throughout her career. While at Howard, Harris also participated in student activism, engaging in protests and rallies. These experiences further solidified her commitment to addressing issues of racial inequality, economic justice, and civil rights. Being in Washington, D.C., a city deeply connected to American politics and social movements, gave Harris firsthand exposure to the mechanisms of government and the importance of civic engagement. Howard University instilled in Harris the confidence and ambition to pursue a career in law and politics. She graduated in 1986 with a degree in political science and economics, and from there, she went on to earn her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris has often spoken about the profound impact her time at Howard had on her, referring to it as one of the most defining experiences of her life.
