On 02/11/2007, Jerry Seinfeld released Bee Movie, an animated comedy produced by DreamWorks Animation that marked his first major original entertainment project following the end of the sitcom Seinfeld in 1998. The film featured Seinfeld as the voice of Barry B. Benson, a young honeybee who becomes involved in a legal battle against humanity over the commercial exploitation of honey.
Seinfeld co-wrote, produced, and starred in the film, making it one of the most creatively involved projects of his career outside television. The story followed Barry, an ambitious bee dissatisfied with the repetitive structure of hive life, who leaves the colony to explore the human world. After discovering that humans consume and profit from honey produced by bees, Barry files a lawsuit against the human race, triggering a chain of environmental and economic consequences within the film’s fictional universe.
The movie featured a large ensemble cast that included Renée Zellweger as florist Vanessa Bloome, Matthew Broderick as Adam Flayman, Patrick Warburton as Ken, John Goodman as lawyer Layton T. Montgomery, and Chris Rock as Mooseblood the mosquito. The film blended courtroom satire, observational humor, and fast-paced visual comedy while incorporating Seinfeld’s familiar comedic style into an animated setting.
Bee Movie originated from an idea Seinfeld reportedly pitched casually during a dinner conversation with filmmaker Steven Spielberg. DreamWorks Animation later developed the concept into a full feature production. The project became one of Seinfeld’s primary creative focuses during the years following the conclusion of Seinfeld, which had remained one of television’s most commercially successful sitcoms through syndication.
The film performed solidly at the box office, earning more than $290 million worldwide during its theatrical run. Critical reception was mixed to positive, with reviewers often highlighting the unusual premise and Seinfeld’s distinctive comedic voice. Over time, Bee Movie developed an especially strong internet afterlife during the 2010s, becoming widely referenced in memes, parody edits, and online comedy culture, particularly among younger audiences.
The release also represented Seinfeld’s first major involvement in feature-length animation and family-oriented filmmaking. Alongside the theatrical film, DreamWorks launched a broad promotional campaign that included merchandise, video games, and television appearances tied to the project.
