In 2017, J.D. Vance joined Steve Case’s investment firm, Revolution LLC, to help expand the Rise of the Rest initiative. This initiative, founded by Case, aimed to foster entrepreneurship and economic growth in areas of the United States that are often overlooked by traditional venture capital—namely, cities and regions outside of major tech hubs like Silicon Valley, New York, and Boston. Vance’s involvement was a natural extension of his interest in revitalizing America’s heartland, a central theme in his memoir Hillbilly Elegy.
As part of his role at Revolution, Vance worked to identify and support startups in mid-sized cities, particularly in the Rust Belt and other economically struggling regions. He helped guide investments that would provide capital to entrepreneurs in these areas, with the goal of spurring job creation and innovation outside of the nation’s most well-known tech centers. The Rise of the Rest initiative aimed to decentralize the startup economy by empowering businesses in places like Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, mirroring Vance’s personal mission to uplift regions similar to his hometown of Middletown, Ohio.
Vance’s work with Rise of the Rest allowed him to contribute to economic development in underrepresented areas, while also deepening his engagement with venture capital and entrepreneurship.
