Following the failed Nine Years' War against English rule in Ireland, Gaelic lords Hugh O'Neill and Rory O'Donnell, along with other nobles, decided to flee their homeland for the continent in exile. The departure of this group, known as the Flight of the Earls, marked the collapse of the old Gaelic order in Ireland.
The Flight of the Earls had a significant impact on Irish history as it left a power vacuum in the country, leading to further English dominance and the confiscation of the lands belonging to the fleeing nobles. The departure of these Gaelic lords weakened the resistance against English colonization and paved the way for the plantation of Ulster, a turning point in Ireland's demographic and political landscape.
The Flight of the Earls reflected the end of an era for Gaelic Ireland and signaled the beginning of a new chapter under English rule. Despite their efforts to seek support from continental powers, the exiled nobles were unable to regain their former status and influence in Ireland.
