In 1513, Portuguese explorer Jorge Álvares made history as the earliest European visitor to the waters of Hong Kong. His arrival marked the beginning of a significant chapter in the region's trade history, as Portuguese merchants established a trading post known as Tamão. This post facilitated regular trade with southern China, paving the way for cultural and economic exchanges between the two regions. However, the initial success was met with challenges; military clashes in the 1520s led to the expulsion of Portuguese traders from the area. Despite these setbacks, the resilience of trade relations was evident when Portuguese-Chinese trade was re-established in 1549. This revival laid the groundwork for future interactions, culminating in Portugal acquiring a permanent lease for Macau in 1887, which further solidified its presence in the region. The early 16th century thus stands as a pivotal moment in the history of European exploration and trade in Asia, with Jorge Álvares's journey serving as a catalyst for ongoing commercial relationships between Portugal and China. #mooflife #mof #MomentOfLife #JorgeÁlvares #PortugueseExploration #HongKongHistory #TradeRelations #Macau
