On 20/09/2022, Hilton and Voyager Space announced a partnership to design crew lodging and hospitality suites for the planned Starlab commercial space station. The agreement brought hospitality expertise into the development of orbital living environments and expanded the role of private companies in shaping how astronauts may live and work during future commercial space missions. The partnership made Hilton the official hotel partner for Starlab. Designers, architects, and innovation specialists from Hilton began collaborating with Voyager Space to develop astronaut accommodations, including sleeping quarters, communal areas, and hospitality focused spaces. The objective was to improve comfort, efficiency, and well being during extended stays in space while adapting proven hospitality principles to a microgravity environment. The announcement was made jointly from Denver, Colorado, and McLean, Virginia. At the time, Starlab was being developed as a free flying commercial space station designed to support scientific research and commercial activities after the retirement of the International Space Station. According to Voyager Space, the station was expected to support a permanent crew of up to four astronauts and include the George Washington Carver Science Park research facility. Voyager Space Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Dylan Taylor said that the collaboration would help create a more welcoming environment for future space travelers. Hilton President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Nassetta stated that the company planned to apply more than 100 years of hospitality experience to the design of space accommodations while also exploring how space based innovations could improve hotel operations on Earth. The partnership also included plans to examine the complete astronaut experience, from training and preparation on Earth to living in orbit and returning home. In addition to habitat design, both companies expressed interest in future educational, commercial, tourism, and outreach initiatives connected to the development of the station. Why This Moment Matters: The announcement illustrated how commercial space programs were beginning to involve industries beyond traditional aerospace. Human centered design and habitability became increasingly important considerations as companies prepared for longer missions aboard privately operated space stations.
