The Alchon Huns, led by Toramana and later Mihirakula, launched a series of military campaigns that significantly impacted the Gupta Empire, particularly in the northwest region. Their incursions began in the late 490s, when they successfully breached the Gupta defenses, which had previously been considered formidable. The Huns' military strategies and mobility allowed them to exploit weaknesses in the Gupta's territorial control, leading to a rapid expansion of their influence. By the turn of the century, much of the northwest territory of the Gupta Empire had fallen under Hunnic control, marking a critical shift in the power dynamics of the region. This period of conflict contributed to the gradual disintegration of the Gupta Empire, which had been one of the most powerful and culturally rich empires in ancient India. The Huns' invasions not only altered the political landscape but also had lasting effects on trade routes and cultural exchanges in the area, as the empire struggled to maintain its integrity against external pressures.
