The eruption of Mount Pelée is one of the most catastrophic volcanic events in recorded history. Located on the island of Martinique, Mount Pelée had been showing signs of increased activity prior to the eruption. The event culminated in a series of explosive eruptions that released pyroclastic flows, which are fast-moving currents of hot gas and volcanic matter. The most devastating of these flows struck the nearby town of Saint-Pierre, which was home to approximately 30,000 residents. The eruption obliterated the town within minutes, leading to a staggering loss of life. It is estimated that around 28,000 people perished as a result of the eruption and its aftermath, making it one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions in history. The destruction was not limited to human life; the eruption also devastated the local economy and environment, leading to long-term consequences for the region.
