On December 7, 2020, Ghana held its general elections, resulting in the re-election of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for a second term. Representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Akufo-Addo secured victory with 51.59% of the total votes, defeating his main opponent, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who garnered 47.36%. The election saw a high voter turnout, reflecting the strength of Ghana’s democratic process.
President Akufo-Addo’s re-election was largely credited to his administration’s focus on economic reforms, industrialization, and social intervention programs such as the Free Senior High School Policy and the One District, One Factory initiative. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic was also praised, as the government implemented swift public health measures and economic support programs to cushion citizens.
Despite tensions and allegations of electoral irregularities from the opposition, the election was declared free and fair by both local and international observers. On January 7, 2021, Nana Akufo-Addo was officially sworn in for his second term, pledging to continue driving Ghana’s development, strengthen democratic institutions, and foster national unity.
This election solidified Ghana’s reputation as one of Africa’s most stable democracies and marked a significant moment in the country’s journey toward economic growth and good governance.
