General George S. Patton died on 21/12/1945 at the age of 60 at a U.S. Army hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, twelve days after sustaining severe injuries in a vehicle accident. The incident occurred on 09/12/1945 when Patton was traveling as a passenger in a 1938 Cadillac staff car near Mannheim while en route to a pheasant hunting trip. During the journey, the car collided at low speed with a U.S. Army truck that turned in front of them. Although others in the vehicle were not seriously injured, Patton was thrown forward and struck his head.
The impact fractured cervical vertebrae in Patton’s neck, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. He was first treated at a military hospital in Heidelberg, where doctors attempted to stabilize his condition. During the following days, Patton remained conscious for periods and received visits from senior officers and his wife, Beatrice. His condition remained critical as medical staff monitored complications related to spinal cord injury and immobilization.
On 21/12/1945, Patton died in his sleep. The cause of death was recorded as a pulmonary embolism, a blood clot that traveled to his lungs, along with congestive heart failure. His death came less than three months after the end of World War II. Patton was later buried at the Luxembourg American Cemetery in Hamm, Luxembourg, alongside soldiers of the U.S. Third Army he had commanded during the war.
