On 14 June 1997, our Managing Director, Michael Berry, was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to training and tourism in Cumbria. The honour recognised his contribution beyond the management of English Lakes Hotels, including his involvement in developing hospitality skills and supporting tourism in the county.
Michael had joined the family hotel group in July 1972 and became Managing Director in 1974 following the death of his uncle, Norman Buckley. During his leadership, English Lakes expanded and invested in its properties, including the development of conference and leisure facilities at Low Wood and the opening of Lancaster House Hotel in 1991.
The OBE became one of several forms of recognition Michael received for his work in hospitality and the region. In 2000, he was subsequently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Catering International Management Association.
