In October 2001, Low Wood Hotel achieved four-star status from both the AA and RAC. The recognition followed a sustained programme of investment in the property, with approximately £8 million spent on improvements and redevelopment during the preceding 10 years. The investment reflected the gradual development of Low Wood from a traditional lakeside hotel into a larger property with an expanded range of accommodation, leisure and hospitality facilities. Achieving four-star status provided external recognition of the standards reached following this period of redevelopment and became an important point in the hotel's modern history. The award also preceded further regional recognition for Low Wood, including its Large Hotel of the Year title at the Cumbria for Excellence Awards in 2003.
