The work represented an important period of expansion for the family hotel business, which had purchased Low Wood in 1958 and The Wild Boar the following year. English Lakes' official company history specifically records that both properties were substantially enlarged in 1969. By this stage, the family business had been welcoming guests at Low Wood since 1953 and was developing a small portfolio of hotels around Windermere.
