Although the first UEFA Nations League group-stage matches were played during late 2018, Cristiano Ronaldo did not participate in Portugal’s opening campaign fixtures. The Portugal captain was absent from the early stages of the tournament as he focused on adapting to his first season with Juventus following his transfer from Real Madrid in the summer of 2018. He returned to the national team in June 2019 for the UEFA Nations League Finals, where he played a decisive role in Portugal winning the inaugural edition of the competition.
The UEFA Nations League Finals were hosted in Portugal, with matches played in Porto and Guimarães. Portugal reached the final after defeating Switzerland 3–1 in the semi-final on 05/06/2019. Ronaldo delivered one of the defining performances of the tournament by scoring all three Portuguese goals. His hat-trick included a free kick and two second-half goals that secured Portugal’s place in the championship match.
Four days later, on 09/06/2019, Portugal faced the Netherlands in the final at the Estádio do Dragão in Porto. The match remained closely contested until the 60th minute, when Gonçalo Guedes scored the winning goal following an assist from Bernardo Silva. Portugal defended the advantage successfully to secure a 1–0 victory and become the first nation to win the UEFA Nations League trophy.
Although Ronaldo did not score in the final itself, his semi-final hat-trick ensured he finished as the top scorer of the Nations League Finals tournament with three goals. Bernardo Silva, meanwhile, was awarded Player of the Tournament for his performances throughout the finals. As Portugal captain, Ronaldo became the first player to lift the UEFA Nations League trophy.
The victory represented Portugal’s second major international title in three years following their triumph at UEFA Euro 2016. The Nations League success reinforced Portugal’s emergence as one of Europe’s strongest international teams during Ronaldo’s captaincy era. It also highlighted the transition of the national team into a new generation that combined experienced players such as Ronaldo and Pepe with younger talents including Bernardo Silva, João Félix, and Rúben Dias.
Ronaldo’s return for the finals demonstrated his continued importance to the Portugal national team despite missing the earlier group-stage matches. His performances in Porto added another chapter to his extensive international career and further strengthened his reputation for decisive contributions in knockout competition.
