On 31/10/2013, Cristiano Ronaldo officially launched his first independent fashion venture, the CR7 Underwear and Sock collection, during a high-profile event at the Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid, Spain. The launch marked Ronaldo’s formal entry into the fashion industry as a brand owner after years of appearing in campaigns for major labels such as Emporio Armani.
The CR7 collection was developed as a premium underwear and lifestyle line intended to reflect Ronaldo’s personal focus on athletic performance, comfort, and style. During promotional interviews surrounding the launch, Ronaldo explained that he wanted the products to meet the same high standards of quality and discipline that he applied to his football career.
The collection was produced in partnership with the JBS Textile Group of Denmark, a company with more than eighty years of manufacturing experience in textiles and clothing production. For the design process, Ronaldo collaborated with New York-based fashion designer Richard Chai, a Council of Fashion Designers of America award winner known for work with major fashion brands including Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan. Chai worked closely with Ronaldo to shape the visual identity and fit of the debut collection.
One of the most widely discussed elements of the launch was a giant 19-meter billboard featuring Ronaldo modeling the CR7 products, installed across the historic façade of Madrid’s Palacio de Cibeles. The large-scale display attracted major media attention in Spain and internationally, becoming one of the most recognizable promotional images associated with the brand’s introduction.
The opening CR7 Underwear range was divided into four categories designed to appeal to different audiences and price ranges. These included the Luxury line, Fashion line, Basic line, and Boys collection. The diversification reflected an effort to position the CR7 brand as both a premium fashion label and a broadly accessible commercial product.
At the time of the launch, Ronaldo was playing for Real Madrid and was approaching one of the most successful periods of his football career. During 2013, he scored 69 goals for club and country and would later win the 2013 FIFA Ballon d'Or in January 2014. His growing global popularity helped transform the CR7 name into an international commercial brand extending beyond football.
The underwear launch became the foundation for a much larger business expansion over the following years. Additional CR7 product lines later included footwear, denim, fragrances, hotels, gyms, and digital media ventures. Ronaldo increasingly positioned himself not only as an athlete but also as an international lifestyle entrepreneur.
The Madrid event highlighted the growing influence of athlete-owned fashion brands during the early 2010s, a period when elite sports figures increasingly developed personal commercial identities independent of traditional sponsorship deals.
