On 02/12/2008, Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the Ballon d'Or, becoming the first Manchester United player in 40 years to win football’s most prestigious individual honor. At just 23 years old, Ronaldo became the fourth Manchester United player to receive the award, joining club legends Denis Law, Sir Bobby Charlton, and George Best, collectively known as the club’s “Holy Trinity.”
Ronaldo earned the Ballon d'Or following an extraordinary 2007–08 season in which he scored 42 goals in all competitions and helped Manchester United win both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. His performances transformed him from one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers into the leading player in world football.
The Ballon d'Or voting, conducted by international football journalists, showed Ronaldo winning comfortably with 446 points. Barcelona forward Lionel Messi finished second with 281 points, while Liverpool striker Fernando Torres placed third with 179 points. Ronaldo’s decisive margin reflected the consistency and impact of his performances throughout the year.
One of Ronaldo’s most important achievements during the 2007–08 season came in the UEFA Champions League. He finished as the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals and scored a header in the final against Chelsea in Moscow. Although he missed his penalty during the shootout, Manchester United ultimately won the Champions League title after Chelsea captain John Terry slipped during a decisive penalty attempt.
Domestically, Ronaldo also dominated English football. He scored 31 Premier League goals, earning the European Golden Shoe as the top league scorer across Europe. His combination of pace, dribbling, aerial ability, and long-range shooting made him the central figure in Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side during one of the club’s strongest modern periods.
The success of 2008 extended beyond European competition. Later that month, Ronaldo helped Manchester United win the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, adding another international title to an already remarkable year. He also completed a sweep of major individual honors by winning the FIFA World Player of the Year, the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, and the FWA Footballer of the Year award.
Ronaldo’s Ballon d'Or victory represented the culmination of his transformation at Manchester United after arriving from Sporting CP in 2003 as a talented but inconsistent teenager. Under Ferguson’s guidance, he developed into one of the most complete attacking players in world football.
The award also marked the beginning of a new era in football individual honors. Ronaldo’s rivalry with Lionel Messi would soon dominate global football for more than a decade, with the two players combining to win nearly every Ballon d'Or between 2008 and 2017.
Only months after receiving the award, Ronaldo completed his world-record transfer to Real Madrid in 2009, beginning another historic chapter in his career.
