On 21/12/2014, a large bronze statue of Cristiano Ronaldo was officially unveiled in his hometown of Funchal on the island of Madeira, Portugal. The ceremony took place only one day after Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco, further adding to what had already been one of the most successful years of his career.
The statue was created by Madeiran sculptor Ricardo Velosa and installed outside the Museu CR7, a museum dedicated to Ronaldo’s life, trophies, and football achievements. Located near the harbor area of Funchal, the monument quickly became one of Madeira’s most visited tourist attractions and a prominent symbol of the island’s association with its most internationally famous athlete.
The bronze sculpture stands approximately 3.4 meters tall and weighs more than 800 kilograms. Velosa designed the statue to depict Ronaldo in his recognizable free-kick stance, with legs apart and body positioned before striking the ball. The plinth beneath the statue features Ronaldo’s name alongside the inscription “Melhor Jogador do Mundo,” Portuguese for “Best Player in the World.”
The unveiling ceremony attracted significant public and media attention in Portugal and internationally. Ronaldo attended the event personally alongside family members, local officials, and supporters. During the ceremony, Madeira’s regional leaders praised Ronaldo for raising the global profile of the island through his football achievements and international fame.
The statue formed part of a broader effort in Madeira to celebrate Ronaldo’s connection to the region. Earlier in 2013, the Museu CR7 had opened in Funchal to display trophies, medals, shirts, and memorabilia from his career. Over time, Madeira increasingly embraced Ronaldo as a central part of its international identity and tourism promotion.
At the time of the unveiling, Ronaldo was playing for Real Madrid and had recently completed another extraordinary year. In 2014, he helped the club win the UEFA Champions League, Copa del Rey, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. Individually, he was also approaching his third Ballon d'Or award, which he would officially win in January 2015.
The statue quickly became one of the most photographed landmarks in Madeira and generated widespread discussion online due to its detailed depiction of Ronaldo’s physique and stance. Visitors from around the world began traveling to Funchal specifically to see both the monument and the CR7 museum.
The tribute reflected Ronaldo’s status not only as a football icon but also as a cultural figure closely associated with Portuguese identity and Madeiran pride. Few active athletes had received such large-scale public monuments in their hometowns while still competing at the peak of their careers.
