In February 2021, The Coca-Cola Company announced the launch of a new 13.2-ounce bottle in the United States made entirely from 100% recycled plastic material, excluding the cap and label. The bottle was introduced as part of the company’s broader “World Without Waste” sustainability initiative, a global strategy focused on reducing packaging waste and increasing the use of recycled materials across Coca-Cola products.
The company stated that the new bottle would begin appearing in select U.S. states during the summer of 2021 for brands including Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar. According to Coca-Cola, the transition to 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) for the bottle body was expected to save more than 20 million pounds of new plastic in the United States during the first year of implementation. The initiative represented one of the company’s largest uses of recycled plastic packaging in a major market at that time.
Coca-Cola launched the bottle as part of its “World Without Waste” goals first announced in 2018. Under that program, the company committed to collecting and recycling the equivalent of every bottle or can it sells globally by 2030 and increasing the recycled content used in packaging. The company also pledged to make all consumer packaging recyclable by the same target year. Coca-Cola executives described the expansion of recycled packaging as a step toward lowering the company’s dependence on virgin petroleum-based plastics.
The move came amid growing international attention on plastic pollution and increasing pressure on large consumer brands to address packaging waste. Environmental organizations and sustainability advocates had frequently identified Coca-Cola among the world’s largest producers of branded plastic waste in global audits conducted by environmental groups. In response, the company expanded investments in recycling infrastructure, packaging redesign, and reusable container systems in multiple markets.
The 100% recycled plastic bottle launch also reflected wider beverage industry trends, with several major soft drink companies introducing higher recycled-content packaging and sustainability targets during the early 2020s. Coca-Cola’s initiative became one of the company’s most visible environmental packaging efforts in the United States and formed part of its long-term strategy to reshape packaging production and recycling systems.
Why This Moment Matters
The 2021 launch of Coca-Cola’s fully recycled plastic bottle in the United States demonstrated how sustainability goals increasingly influenced packaging design and manufacturing decisions in the beverage industry. The initiative also highlighted growing corporate efforts to reduce virgin plastic use while responding to public concern over global plastic waste and recycling challenges.
