Carl Sagan, along with Frank Drake and Linda Salzman Sagan, contributed to a groundbreaking project - the design and assembly of the Pioneer plaque. The plaque was created as the first physical message intended for extraterrestrial life and was attached to the Pioneer 10 spacecraft.
The Pioneer plaque measures approximately 6 by 9 inches and is made of gold-anodized aluminum. It features a series of symbols designed to provide information about the origin of the spacecraft. The design includes a drawing of a human male and female figure, alongside the spacecraft for scale. The human figures are unclothed to depict anatomical detail clearly. Additionally, the plaque contains a schematic representation of the hyperfine transition of hydrogen, which serves as a universal standard for time and length.
One of the most crucial elements is the depiction of the position of our solar system in relation to 14 pulsars. These pulsars were chosen due to their unique and identifiable pulse periods, which would make locating the Earth easier for an extraterrestrial civilization. Another diagram illustrates the position of the Earth within our solar system, relative to the sun and various planets.
The launch of Pioneer 10 enabled this plaque to become humanity's first physical attempt to communicate with potential intelligent extraterrestrial life. While the odds of the plaque being discovered are exceedingly slim, its creation represents a pivotal moment in space exploration and human history. It embodies the desire to reach beyond our world and communicate across the cosmos.
