In 1962, we took the next step in the development of Blunsdon House by becoming a licensed hotel. The change followed several years of gradual growth: Peter and Zan Clifford had first welcomed bed-and-breakfast guests in 1957, when visitors needed accommodation for the Bath and West Agricultural Show, and Blunsdon House subsequently developed into a country club in 1960.
Becoming a fully licensed hotel formalised that progression from a small hospitality venture into a hotel business. It established Blunsdon House on the path that the Clifford family would continue to develop over the following decades, while retaining the family ownership that had been part of the business from its earliest days. The hotel's own history records 1962 as the year of this transition; contemporary secondary accounts of its history likewise describe the property as becoming a fully licensed hotel that year.
