BlackBerry officially launched the BlackBerry Priv smartphone on 06/11/2015, marking the company’s first device powered by the Android operating system. The launch represented a major strategic shift for BlackBerry, which had previously relied on its own BlackBerry 10 operating system while facing declining smartphone market share against Apple’s iPhone and Android competitors.
The BlackBerry Priv combined Android software with several design features associated with traditional BlackBerry devices. The smartphone included a slide out physical keyboard beneath a curved touchscreen display, along with BlackBerry’s security focused software enhancements and productivity applications. The device featured a 5.4 inch AMOLED display, an 18 megapixel camera developed with Schneider Kreuznach optics, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor.
BlackBerry promoted the Priv as a secure Android smartphone aimed at enterprise users and consumers concerned about privacy and mobile security. The company integrated BlackBerry Hub, DTEK security monitoring software, and encrypted communication features into the Android platform. BlackBerry executives stated that the device was intended to combine the large Android app ecosystem with BlackBerry’s established reputation for enterprise grade security.
CEO John Chen described the launch as an effort to adapt to changing smartphone market conditions while maintaining BlackBerry’s software and security strengths. Analysts viewed the release as one of the company’s most important hardware decisions during its attempt to remain competitive in the global smartphone market.
Despite receiving attention for its keyboard design and security features, the Priv did not reverse BlackBerry’s declining hardware business. Smartphone sales continued to weaken in the following years, and in 2016 BlackBerry announced it would stop internally developing smartphones and instead focus primarily on software, cybersecurity, and enterprise services.
The Priv later became one of the final flagship smartphones designed directly by BlackBerry before the company transitioned away from internal handset development. The device remains notable for combining BlackBerry’s traditional hardware identity with the Android ecosystem during a transitional period for the company.
Why This Moment Matters
The launch of the BlackBerry Priv showed how legacy smartphone companies adapted to the dominance of Android and iOS during the mid 2010s. By adopting Android while keeping its signature keyboard and security features, BlackBerry attempted to balance its established brand identity with changing consumer expectations and software ecosystems.
