Karl Nehammer officially assumed office as Austria’s Chancellor

Karl Nehammer officially assumed office as Austria’s Chancellor on December 6, 2021, succeeding Alexander Schallenberg. Nehammer, a member of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), took over leadership during a politically turbulent time, following the resignation of Sebastian Kurz and Schallenberg’s brief stint in office. Before becoming chancellor, Nehammer served as Austria's Interior Minister, where he focused on issues related to security and immigration, which would later shape some of his policies as head of government.
