In 1965, 18 year old Arnold Schwarzenegger fulfilled his mandatory one year military service in the Austrian Armed Forces, known as the Bundesheer. During his service, he was assigned as a tank driver and operated an M47 Patton tank, a heavy armored vehicle used by Austria at the time. Conscription was required for Austrian men, and Schwarzenegger entered service shortly after turning 18.
While serving, Schwarzenegger continued training in bodybuilding whenever possible. During this period, he briefly left his base without permission to compete in the Junior Mr. Europe contest. He traveled to the competition, won the title, and returned to his unit, where he received disciplinary action for the unauthorized absence. Afterward, his superiors allowed him time to continue training, recognizing his achievements and potential in bodybuilding.
Schwarzenegger completed his military service later in 1965. The experience coincided with his transition from local competitions to broader European bodybuilding events. His time in the Austrian Armed Forces became a frequently referenced early chapter in his career, combining mandatory service with his continued pursuit of bodybuilding.
