Pedro de Mendoza, a Spanish conquistador, led an expedition to establish a settlement near the Rio de la Plata. Facing challenges like scarcity of resources and resistance from the indigenous Querandíes, Mendoza founded Buenos Aires. The settlement served as a strategic foothold for Spanish colonization and trade in the region.
Mendoza faced difficulties maintaining control due to attacks from the indigenous peoples and lack of supplies. Eventually, the settlement was abandoned in favor of Asunción. Despite its initial struggles, Buenos Aires would later be refounded in 1580 by Juan de Garay, becoming a key city in the Spanish colonial empire.
The establishment of Buenos Aires marked the beginning of European presence in the area, shaping the cultural and economic landscape of the region for centuries to come. The city would grow to become a major political, economic, and cultural hub in South America.
