On 26 February 2026, we reported on the latest stage of our work with the Made Smarter Digital Internship Programme, using two specialist placements to explore practical applications of artificial intelligence and automation within Arden Dies. Data science student Deniz Beyazgul from Manchester Metropolitan University and robotics and automation student Husan Vokhidov from the University of Salford worked directly with our production teams during three-month placements. The projects examined how AI and machine learning could support real manufacturing and operational processes, including the analysis of CAD/CAM data, workflow automation and improvements to production systems. The wider Made Smarter internship programme also provides expertise in areas such as robotics, CNC and CAD-to-CNC workflows, data analytics, system integration and digital twins, allowing manufacturers to investigate technologies before committing to wider adoption. This work built on our earlier involvement with Made Smarter, through which Arden had already used digital interns and funding to accelerate its adoption of 3D printing and other manufacturing technologies. The 2026 placements extended that approach into AI and machine learning, with the emphasis on identifying applications capable of delivering measurable improvements rather than adopting technology for its own sake
