On 09/06/2025, Apple Inc. introduced Liquid Glass, a new software design language across its operating systems, during the keynote of the Worldwide Developers Conference held at Apple Park in Cupertino, California. Apple described Liquid Glass as its broadest software design update ever and the first major visual overhaul since the flat design introduced with iOS 7 in 2013. The new design system focuses on layered translucency, real time rendering, and motion driven visual responses intended to unify the appearance of Apple platforms while adapting dynamically to content and device movement. Apple demonstrated Liquid Glass as a translucent material designed to mimic real world glass. Interface elements reflect and refract background content in real time, creating depth across toolbars, controls, and navigation surfaces. The system uses dynamic responsiveness, with specular highlights and fluid animations reacting to device motion and user interaction. Apple also showed contextual adaptation, where interface components automatically adjust color, opacity, and contrast depending on surrounding content, wallpaper, and light or dark appearance modes. These behaviors are rendered live rather than using static blur effects, allowing consistent visual layering across apps. The Liquid Glass design extends across Apple’s 2025 operating system lineup, including iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe version 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26. Apple presented updates to system components such as Control Center, app sidebars, navigation bars, widgets, and system buttons using the new material. Developers were provided updated APIs and design tools to adopt Liquid Glass in third party apps, ensuring consistent visual behavior across Apple’s ecosystem. The rollout began with developer betas released on 09/06/2025, with public releases planned later in 2025 alongside the next generation of Apple software updates.
