The New York City Draft Riots were a series of violent disturbances that erupted in response to the implementation of the draft during the Civil War. The draft law allowed for the conscription of men into the Union Army, which led to significant unrest, particularly among Irish immigrants. Many of these immigrants had recently become citizens, often without fully understanding the implications of their new status, including the obligation to serve in the military. The draft was perceived as unfair, especially since wealthier individuals could pay for substitutes to take their place, creating a divide between the affluent and the working-class citizens who could not afford such options. This disparity fueled resentment and anger among the Irish community, who felt they were being disproportionately targeted by the draft.
