Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it had destroyed an underground military bunker located beneath the Iranian leadership compound in central Tehran. The strike targeted a fortified subterranean facility beneath the Office of the Supreme Leader, known as Beit-e Rahbari, which Israeli officials described as an emergency wartime command center used by senior Iranian leadership.
According to the IDF, the operation involved approximately 50 fighter jets that dropped around 100 munitions on the site. The attack focused on a hardened underground structure designed to withstand conventional strikes and intended to serve as a secure command facility during major military conflicts. Israeli military officials stated that the bunker was built to allow Iran’s leadership to manage wartime operations from a protected location beneath central Tehran.
Israeli intelligence units played a central role in identifying and mapping the facility prior to the strike. The IDF said the intelligence work was conducted by specialized units including Unit 8200, responsible for signals intelligence, and Unit 9900, which focuses on geospatial intelligence. These units reportedly mapped an extensive network of tunnels extending several kilometers beneath parts of central Tehran, enabling planners to determine the bunker’s location and structural layout.
The facility had originally been constructed for Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. However, Israeli officials stated that Khamenei was killed during earlier strikes carried out on 28/02/2026, before he could relocate to the underground shelter. After his death, the IDF said the bunker continued to be used by senior Iranian officials for operational coordination.
Israeli military authorities stated that destroying the underground complex was intended to disrupt Iran’s command and control infrastructure during the ongoing conflict. The strike formed part of a wider Israeli air campaign targeting Iranian military installations and leadership infrastructure during the escalation that began at the end of February 2026.
