The sinking of HMS York by Italian MTMs of the Decima MAS marked a notable event in naval warfare during the conflict in the Mediterranean. HMS York was a heavy cruiser of the Royal Navy, and its loss represented a significant blow to British naval strength in the region. The operation took place in Suda Bay, Crete, where the Italian forces executed a coordinated attack that resulted in the sinking of not only HMS York but also a Norwegian tanker named Pericles, another tanker, and a cargo ship. This operation showcased the effectiveness of the Italian MTMs, which were fast motor torpedo boats designed for hit-and-run attacks against larger vessels. The successful engagement demonstrated the vulnerability of even larger warships to smaller, agile units, altering the dynamics of naval engagements in the Mediterranean theater.
