The 2002 FIDE World Chess Championship was held in Moscow, Russia. The first six rounds were played between 27 November and 14 December 2001, and the final match began on 16 January and ended on 23 January 2002. The Ukrainian Grandmaster Ruslan Ponomariov, just 18 years old, won the championship, becoming the youngest-ever FIDE World Chess Champion. He defeated his compatriot Vassily Ivanchuk in the final with a score of 4½–2½, demonstrating remarkable composure and tactical skill despite his young age. Ponomariov’s victory was celebrated as a breakthrough for Ukrainian chess and highlighted the rise of a new generation of prodigies. However, the chess world remained divided at the time, as Vladimir Kramnik continued to hold the Classical World Chess Championship title until the 2006 unification.
