On 23/09/1777, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart departed Salzburg with his mother, Anna Maria Mozart, beginning an extended journey aimed at securing employment outside his hometown. At 21 years old, Mozart had grown dissatisfied with limited opportunities at the Salzburg court and sought a position that would offer greater recognition and income. With permission to travel, he and his mother set out for cities known for active musical life and potential patronage, while his father Leopold Mozart remained in Salzburg.
The journey first took them to Munich and then to Augsburg, where Mozart visited relatives and performed. From there they traveled to Mannheim, arriving on 30/10/1777, where Mozart spent several months attempting to obtain a court appointment with Elector Karl Theodor. He composed, taught, and performed during the stay but did not secure a permanent position. In March 1778, Mozart and his mother continued to Paris, departing Mannheim on 14/03/1778 and arriving in the French capital on 23/03/1778.
The trip lasted roughly sixteen months and included both professional opportunities and personal hardship. In Paris, Mozart composed Symphony No. 31 in D major, K. 297, but failed to obtain stable employment. His mother fell ill and died there on 03/07/1778. After remaining in Paris through the summer, Mozart departed on 26/09/1778 and eventually returned to Salzburg on 15/01/1779, where he accepted a new court appointment. The departure from Salzburg on 23 September 1777 therefore marked the beginning of Mozart’s longest early adult tour in search of independence.
