In 2010, we began our partnership with British ethical bottled water company One Water, introducing its products onboard Virgin Atlantic flights. The partnership connected an everyday part of our inflight service with a wider social purpose, helping to fund clean drinking water projects in communities facing limited access to safe water.
One Water committed 100% of its profits to funding clean water initiatives, particularly in disadvantaged communities in Africa. By serving the brand onboard, we provided an ongoing source of financial support for these projects through our catering operations. The arrangement formed part of our Change Is in the Air sustainability programme, which included efforts to improve the social and environmental standards of the products and services we purchased.
By 2016, the partnership had generated £229,000 towards clean water projects, helping provide safe drinking water to more than 30,000 people. This included support for a programme in Rwanda's Rulindo district, aimed at improving access to clean water for schools, healthcare facilities and households. The partnership demonstrated how our purchasing decisions could contribute to community development alongside our regular airline operations.
