In June 1991, we introduced individual television screens for passengers across all cabin classes, bringing a more personalised entertainment experience to our long-haul flights. The new system offered six entertainment channels, allowing customers to choose what they wanted to watch rather than relying on a single programme shown on shared cabin screens. Televisions were installed either in seatbacks or on adjustable seat arms, making personal viewing available to passengers throughout the aircraft. The introduction built on our earlier use of portable Sony Video Walkman devices for Upper Class passengers in 1989. By extending individual screens to every cabin, we made personal inflight entertainment available to a much wider group of travellers. Virgin Atlantic became the first airline operating wide-body aircraft to provide individual television screens with a choice of channels across all classes, establishing a feature that would subsequently become common on long-haul services. The six-channel system gave passengers greater flexibility over how they spent their time onboard and became an important part of our approach to improving the flying experience. It also provided a foundation for the development of more advanced inflight entertainment systems, as personal screens and individual viewing choices became increasingly important to long-haul passengers.
