On 20 December 1999, we announced an agreement for Singapore Airlines to acquire a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic for approximately £600 million, valuing the business at around £1.2 billion. The transaction brought one of Asia's leading international airlines into our ownership structure, while Richard Branson's Virgin Group retained a controlling 51% interest. It was an important change in our ownership and established a strategic partnership between two independently operated airlines.
The agreement was designed to strengthen both airlines' international networks and offer passengers greater access to destinations across Europe, Asia and North America. With largely complementary route networks, the partnership created opportunities for codeshare services, frequent flyer cooperation and shared airport lounge arrangements. Both airlines would retain their individual brands, management and service identities.
For Virgin Atlantic, the investment provided an opportunity to develop closer commercial ties with an established international airline while maintaining our independence under Virgin Group's majority ownership. The agreement also reflected growing cooperation and consolidation within the global airline industry as carriers sought to expand their international reach through strategic partnerships.
