In November 2003, we introduced the Upper Class Suite, a redesigned premium cabin seat that combined a comfortable reclining seat with a fully flat bed. Developed to improve the long-haul travel experience, the new design gave Upper Class passengers greater personal space, privacy and sleeping comfort, addressing the needs of travellers on overnight and extended international flights.
The Upper Class Suite featured an innovative seat-to-bed conversion system, allowing passengers to turn their seat into a separate, fully flat sleeping surface rather than simply reclining it. The design also incorporated personal storage, an adjustable ottoman that could serve as a seat for a companion, and individual entertainment facilities. Its distinctive herringbone layout helped maximise the use of cabin space while giving passengers direct access to the aisle.
Developed in collaboration with London-based design consultancy Factorydesign and seating manufacturer Contour Aerospace, the Upper Class Suite became an important part of our premium cabin offering. The product received international design recognition, including a Red Dot Design Award in 2004, reflecting the attention given to passenger comfort, functionality and the overall cabin environment.
