On 10 October 2014, we welcomed our first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to the Virgin Atlantic fleet, becoming the first European airline to take delivery of the aircraft type. Registered G-VNEW and named Birthday Girl in celebration of our 30th anniversary, the aircraft arrived at London Gatwick Airport following its delivery flight from Boeing's production facilities in Everett, Washington. It was the first of 16 Boeing 787-9s on order at the time, beginning a new phase of investment in our long-haul fleet. The twin-engine Dreamliner introduced improvements in fuel efficiency, cabin comfort and operating performance compared with older-generation aircraft. Boeing estimated that the 787 family would use approximately 20% less fuel than the aircraft it was designed to replace. Passengers benefited from larger windows, improved cabin humidity, lower cabin altitude and modern LED lighting, alongside updated inflight entertainment and seating across our Upper Class, Premium Economy and Economy cabins. The aircraft was prepared for its first scheduled commercial service between London Heathrow and Boston on 28 October 2014. Its introduction gave us a more efficient aircraft for long-haul operations, supporting our plans to modernise the fleet, manage operating costs and reduce the environmental impact of flying. The Dreamliner also provided additional flexibility as we developed our transatlantic network in cooperation with Delta Air Lines.
