The United National Congress (UNC) achieved a decisive victory in the 28 April 2025 general election in Trinidad and Tobago, ending nearly a decade of rule by the People’s National Movement (PNM). The UNC, led by veteran politician Kamla Persad‑Bissessar, won 26 out of 41 seats in the House of Representatives, giving it a clear majority and control of the government. This electoral success marked a strong comeback for Persad‑Bissessar and her party after years in opposition, as voters responded to concerns over crime, the economy, and public services during the campaign. Following the UNC’s victory, Kamla Persad‑Bissessar was sworn in as Prime Minister on 1 May 2025, becoming the first woman in Trinidad and Tobago’s history to serve twice in that office, having previously led the country from 2010 to 2015. Her government also appointed key Cabinet members to manage portfolios aimed at addressing national challenges and delivering on campaign promises. The UNC’s win and Persad‑Bissessar’s return to leadership signified a major political shift in the twin‑island republic and set the stage for the party’s policy agenda in the new parliamentary term.
